Maverick is up for Sale!
A PERSONAL FOREWORD
I bought Maverick in 2009 , taking her over in Honfleur in the English channel.
From there I sailed her down to Las Palmas where Maverick got a full overhaul, making her fit for Atlantic cruising. In the process I restored the underwater ship to a basically brand new condition and upgraded the interior construction, the instrumentation and the sails and rigging with a truly ocean going boat in mind. Since then she has carried me down to Uruguay from where I sailed her back single handed, giving me absolute certainty of her seaworthiness and reliability.
However, as life often goes my ambitions have changed and hence I am now selling Maverick. So for everyone who wants a proven boat for passage making this is an ideal opportunity! Maverick comes with an extensive set of tools and spare parts, all kitchen utensils plus heaps of literature, maps and pilot charts. So all you have to do is load her up with provisions, fill the tanks and start sailing. The asking price is GBP46.000,-

Selling Description Maverick
Maverick is a Bruce Roberts designed long keeled steel cruising yacht with aft cockpit and a raised deck house designed for serious ocean cruising. She has proven herself in two Atlantic crossings, sailing from the English channel to Uruguay and back, including the challenging conditions along the South American coast.
Dimensions LOA 11 metres (36ft), Beam 3.3 metres. Displacement 10 tons (approx.), Draught 1.5 metres, Sail Area 72 square metres.
When launched in 1991 she was first sailed in Scottish waters and then in the Mediterranean sea. She is registered in Austria and VAT paid in the EU.
Launched in 1991 and extensively overhauled in 2009 she had only two owners.
Bruce Roberts’ designs have a deserved reputation for their seagoing qualities. She is rigged for easy short handed sailing - cutter rigged with roller reefing on both genoa and staysail and slab reefing and lazyjacks on main. All running rigging is led aft to the cockpit. Engine is BMC 1.5, approx. 35 hp., professionally marinised with Bowman fittings and Aquadrive flexible coupling. She will maintain 4-5 knots into the wind in moderately rough conditions with a maximum 6kn possible in calm waters. She has tiller steering in the cockpit and internal wheel steering. She is fitted with a "Windpilot" wind vane steering for passage making. (new´09)
She is fitted out for comfortable long term living aboard for two + reasonable accommodation for guests. This means large double berth in generous forward cabin, seating/dining area in saloon which converts to double berth (allowing passage fore and aft), and two very generous quarter berths at floor level in the wheel house. Galley is big with double sink, pressurised hot water, two burner, grill and oven cooker, and good sized fridge. Also, heads with hot water shower, holding tanks, cockpit awning and bimini, and diesel heater. She is intended to operate independently of shore resources for considerable periods which cuts down on marina charges.
Headroom: Wheelhouse: 1,71m, Kitchen: 1,96m, Forward: 1,75m
CONSTRUCTION
The main steelwork for hull and superstructure was professionally built and fitting out and equipping was done by the previous owner. The under water ship is basically new 2009. All rusty parts were cut out and replaced, so were both water inlets and the stern tube and rudder shaft throughput. On the outside the entire hull was sandblasted and new paint built up. (9 layers) On the inside all affected areas were treated with three layers of rust protection (Owatrol). Leaking hatches were sealed and a drainage system form all holds to the bilge established.
As opposed to modern production boats the interior has a nice rustic charm. Floors are in oak; there is extensive use of pine with white or light coloured panels on walls and deckhead. The hull is insulated above the waterline with ply-backed cork panels glued to the tar-epoxy primer which has virtually avoided internal corrosion.
Teak has been used externally for cockpit coamings and the doors. Cockpit seats are Iroko. Stainless steel has been used on vulnerable parts of the exterior such as chainplates, rubbing strake and toerail, to minimise rust stains. Extensive areas of deck and cockpit are covered with Treadmaster. The windows have just been replaced (´09 of course) by 8mm laminated glass, slightly tinted, and have stainless steel frames.
INSULATION AND VENTILATION
Very effective cork insulation above waterline. Total of 5 through deck ventilators + 2 aft in quarterberths. Also, windscoop for forward cabin hatch.
PRAISE THE CUTTER RIG
A personal word first: I never thought that, but for cruising there is no better option than the cutter rig! Having sailed and studied it in all conditions I became a dedicated fan because of its versatility and the extra safety it offers.
Maverick is cutter rigged, with roller reefing on high cut genoa, and on self tacking inner staysail. Mainsail is fully battened with three slab reefs and it lowers into top-zipping lazybag.
Total sail area is 72 square metres:
Genoa: 36m2
Staysail: 14m2
Main: 22m2
The cutter rig gives incredible flexibility to adjust to wind conditions. The staysail helps to give the genoa a perfect shape forming a jet between the sails under almost all wind conditions. This works so well because with two roller reefs the sizes of the two sails can be adjusted relative to each other as required. Even when before the wind in very light airs with a boomed out genoa I used the staysail tied out the opposite way successfully deflecting more wind into the genoa helping it stay in shape. When the wind picks up too much the staysail alone gives a worthy and adjustable storm sail with the load entering the mast at the point where the extra running backstays additionally support the mast. This is also where the main ends when in its third reef. A good feel under rough conditions.
There also is a 80m2 blister sail for sailing under light conditions, to be hauled with the extra spinnaker halyard. A large area slider to go around the rolled up genoa and a barber hauler for the ideal trim are also provided. The 6m spinnaker boom covers all your needs.
Sails are by Crusader, all in reasonable condition. The blister sail is new 2009 by Lee sails, as is the extra tough 6m2 storm jib by ATN which can be hoisted over the rolled in genoa or staysail. Both foresails have high quality red acrylic sacrificial strips which match the mainsail lazy bag.
Halyards and reefing lines are led to winches in cockpit at rear of wheelhouse. Mainsheet is rigged to aft of cockpit from end of boom. All running rigging is new 2009, a barber hauler was added to trim both the genoa and the blister and the winches for mainsail and genoa were replaced by larger ones. Tapered mast is quality aluminium extrusion with internal halyards. Standing rigging is 8mm stainless steel with twin backstays and runners.
The mast stands on deck and is hinged, designed to be laid. With the anchor point of the shrouds at the level oh the hinge side stability while laying is no problem. (That is what the steel profile construction on the sides is for)
ENGINE
35 HP 1.5 BMC Diesel. Fresh water cooled. Professionally marinised with Bowman fittings.
Water cooled Hurth Gearbox.
Aquadrive flexible couplings
3 blade propeller with rope cutter.
Tank capacity apx.200 litres, second tank 200l

New 2009: Cylinder head plained, gasket renewed, injectors serviced, bowman fittings renewed, new sweet water pump, sea water pump, check valve in exhaust renewed, exhaust hose partly new, non return system in seawater system installed, second tank connected.
The outboard engine is a Suzuki, 2HP.
STEERING
Partially balanced rudder mounted on rear of long keel with stock led through steel tube to cockpit (gives good cockpit drainage). Tufnol and nylon bearings. Teak tiller. Tillermate 2500 autopilot mounted between cockpit seat and tiller. I used it under engine and otherwise the wind pilot.
Robust stainless tube crank and rod linkage to inside teak and stainless steel wheel.
WIND PILOT (Förtmann, D)
New´09, this really is the ultimate companion for passage making.
Without the need for any electric energy and absolutely silently this system perfectly steered me over the Atlantic. And is does discipline you to set the sails right which again increases boat speed.
BATTERIES
Located under wheel house floor.
Engine battery - 105 Amp. new 2011
Domestic batteries, bank of two x 105 Amp. new 2011
Volt watch battery state indicator.
Ampmeter and Voltmeter (new´09)
POWER
Sterling alternator regulator for rapid charging under engine.

Ample lights including 6 directable LED/Halogen spots in saloon and fore cabin, and chart table light. Five twelve volt sockets.
Navigation lights. High 3 colour lantern is LED (new´09), low option with combination switch.
PLUMBING
The volume of the two fresh water tanks together is apx.900l (Port side: apx.390l, Starboard side apx.510l) and the tanks have been completely restored in ´09, ground to bare metal and new food grade epoxy paint built up. A Jabsco active filter was installed and the piping from tank to galley replaced by food grade hoses. Jabsco pump and accumulator for pressurised system with hot and cold water. Morco gas water heater situated in galley.
Gas storage in cockpit locker (4 camping gas bottles) with on-off solenoid switch controlled from cabin. (very very comfortable!)
Two stainless steel hand wash basins in galley, armature new ´09.
In the heads there is a combination tap/shower fitting which allows on/off control at shower head. Also hand pump for use overnight to avoid noise. There is a second shower fitting to be connected to the solar shower bag on deck. This large custom made bag will allow several hot showers fed through deck to the privacy of the heads compartment.
Domestic sized curtained shower tray which drains to holding tank (shared with galley sink).
All in all, even for me at 6'6" the heads is roomy.
Holding tank has electric pump which pumps out through bilge pump outlet.
The apx. 80l blackwater tank is pumped out via the Henderson toilet pump, a very reliable membrane pump. Good to have in any anchorage or harbour and almost essential in Turkish inshore waters where you can be fined for discharging waste.
Both the grey- and the blackwater tanks have been cleaned out and serviced ´09.
INSTRUMENTS
Instruments in Maverick have been kept simple but effective. Each instrument is independent allowing for easy replacement or updating. For me it is a must that the failure of one instrument does not affect any others. They are mounted in the wheelhouse, but are easily visible from the tiller steering position.
IRIDIUM SATELLITE PHONE Motorola 9505A
With magnetic outside antenna and data adaptor.
Via Onsatmail it is possible to receive GRIB files very efficiently without the need of a browser. (and you can make a phone call and send and receive mails, of course)
EPIRB, new´09
McMurdoc G5 Smartfind Plus, 406MHZ GPS EPIRB
COMPASS
Azimuth KVH electronic compass, self adjusting for deviation (wonderful in a steel boat).
GPS
MLR FX 312. This is a very user friendly instrument which does all one would want. I usually have it displaying course and speed over ground - position is immediately available.
GPS for Computer Navigation
New´09 I installed an additional antenna with a USB connection at the chart table for Computer navigation.
GARMIN Etrax handheld GPS
For me a this back up is a must, hence this basic but effective hand held device with 12V plug. You can operate it by your board supply or, if that fails too, independently
by batteries.
VHF Northstar Explorer 710, new´09
Mounted to mast antenna, plus fold up emergency antenna.
For Back up and on board or to shore communication there is a Raymarine RAY101E hand held VHF.
ECHOSOUNDER Raymarine ST60
This has large easily read digits and deep and shallow water alarms.
The old wooden underwater mounting pedestal was replaced by a welded steel construction in ´09.
GARMIN GMI10 WIND AND WATER LOG, new´09
I found it a wonderful instrument which allows for so much better sail trim, indicating true and apparent wind speed. It also gives air and water temperature plus air pressure including 24hr history.
There also is a trailing log, seldom used.
FURUNO-RADAR 1623, new´09
An indispensable companion on long passages. You set a proximity alert and in the power saving mode the radar switches on apx. every 15mins to scan the area for
1 min. This will allow you to keep it on the entire night without the need for extra power generation. The advantage over the AIS is that it shows all vessels, also smaller than 300brt. Plus, the active radar shows up better on the other radar screen than any radar reflector. It is their basic model with 16nm reach, but at av. 5kn boat speed that does nicely.
BAROMETER
Prosser Weathertrend which gives rising or falling rate and retains data for 24 hours.
A good back up to the Garmin.
STOWAGE – on deck
